Annotation on the stretcher: Capture of Rome by the Gauls. Scene of Senator Papirius before the massacre (Histoire romaine Tite-Live) J. Blanquer 1878.

Received at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris in 1874, Jacques Léonard Blanquer was in his youth a student of Guiraud at the Perpignan museum then pupil of Cabanel in Paris in 1874. A famous portrait of Leconte de Lisle in his hand is kept at the Musée du Trianon in Versailles. He was also curator of the Perpignan Museum.

The subject of our painting is the capture of Rome by the Gauls, subject of the Prix de Rome in 1877. This historical episode, related by Titus Live, dates from 390 before Jesus Christ. Titus Live relates that the Gauls returned to Rome three days after the Roman defeat on the Allia. The plundering of the city was launched following an altercation between Senator Marcus Papirius and a Gallic warrior. To defend himself from the warrior who pulls his beard, the Roman strikes him on the head with his ivory scepter, which starts the massacre. The Gauls burn Rome and kill the inhabitants who remained there.

Jacques Léonard Blanquer might have produced this sketch for the Prix de Rome in 1877. Dated on the reverse of 1878, it could be a sort of ricordo for the artist, unless the label on the reverse is subsequent to the production of the board. It represents the moment which precedes the dispute between the senator and the Gaul, the other candidates for the Prix de Rome of that year (such as Chartran or Moreau de Tours) decided to represent the moment when the Gaul pulls the senator's beard.
