Square Italian Mid Century Sofa Table With Slate Top Attributed To Tobia Ccarpa

Italian sofa table from the 1980-ies attributed to the designer Tobia Scarpa.

The table impresses with its unusual design and restrained materials.
The table top is made of stone, slate solid - the framing of the
Plate (3-16cm) is made of several layers of wood.
In layers, different colored wood materials are placed on top of each other, thus appearing on the surface colored lines that taper from 16.0cm wide to 3.0cm wide.
On the surface appear yellow-brown, red-brown and black stripes alternating which were then traced again and
giving the table an artistic touch.
The edges of the frame are rounded and they are soft in contrast to the linear table shape.
The base is solid oak stained black and subordinates the top.
The textured, tactile slate and oak provide an interesting contrast to the smooth wood surface.


Tobia Scarpa (born January 1, 1935 in Venice) is an Italian architect and designer. He is known for his lamps, such as the wall lamp Foglio (1966).
Tobia Scarpa was born the son of the famous architect Carlo Scarpa. He studied architecture and design at the University of Venice. Since 1957 he has been designing products such as lamps, furniture and other objects. From 1960 he collaborated with his wife Afra Scarpa. Significant products created during this period are the sofa "Bastiano", the armchair "Soriana" and lamps with Achille Castiglioni for "Flos".

In addition to lighting objects and furniture, Tobia and Afra Scarpa designed interiors and industrial buildings. Very famous are their designs for the prototype of the sales rooms and for a factory building of the Benetton Group. The series of Vetri a "occhi", which Tobia Scarpa designed for Venini/Murano in 1960/61, is one of the masterpieces of 20th century Venetian glass art.

The works of Tobia Scarpa are exhibited in major museums and can be seen at major design exhibitions.
