Although not located stricto sensu within the Montparnasse district, a famous historical center of artistic and intellectual life in the capital, the name of this institution is often associated with it. Founded in 1904 by the Swiss Martha Stettler (1870-1945) and dedicated to both painting and sculpture, it was very famous at the beginning of the 20th century. Taken over in 1957 by the Charpentier family, founder of the Académie Charpentier, it still houses two free workshops under its original name, one for painting and drawing, the other for sketches, based on live models. La Grande Chaumière had as teachers, among others, Bourdelle, Zadkine, Despiau, Eugène Grasset, René Ménard, Lucien Simon, Maurice Denis, Jacques-Émile Blanche, André Dauchez, Walter Sickert, Fernand Léger and André Lhote. Among the artists who studied there are Giacometti, Calder, Louise Bourgeois, Germaine Richier, Tamara de Lempicka, Balthus, Modigliani, Poliakoff, Riopelle, Rebeyrolle, Zao Wou-Ki, Eileen Gray, Meret Oppenheim, but also Serge Rezvani and Serge Gainsbourg.
