City of Inner Mongolia, located on the left bank of the Yellow River (Huang Hé: 5,164 km). The art of weaving paotous rugs began at the beginning of the 19th century. The majority of paotous rugs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are generally on a blue background, more rarely on a red background, which sets them apart from other Chinese rugs. We most often find themes of landscapes, clouds, floral motifs, animals, imaginary animals such as the phoenix or the Fô dog, but also human representations and interior scenes. This piece with a refined and soothing pattern is a fine example of ancient paotous. On a blue background, symbolizing the sky, life and renewal in nature, a phoenix *, on a rock and under a tree, looks up at the sky where we can see, at the top left, a cloud symbol of power .

* The phoenix is a fabulous bird that is like a peacock and a pheasant. Emblem of the Empress and associated with the dragon, it becomes a symbol of happiness. Another important symbol is depicted. It is the peony, on the left, facing the phoenix, emblem of fertility, representing spring and considered by the Chinese as the queen of flowers.
