Au Lapin Agile is a Paris cabaret located on the Butte Montmartre, at 22 rue des Saules, in the 18th arrondissement. Frequented by famous artists such as Picasso, Maupassant, Apollinaire or more recently Brassens, the Lapin Agile is one of the oldest cabarets in Paris. Born in the middle of the 19th century - well before the birth of the Black Cat in 1881! -, it was in 1869 that this small shack located a stone's throw from the Maison Rose took the name of Cabaret des Assassins, after being briefly called Au rendez-vous des voleurs. The reason ? The engravings then hung on its walls represent famous assassins! A few years later, in 1880, the owner of this cabaret, already frequented by many artists, entrusted the cartoonist André Gill, familiar with the place, with the making of a sign. The latter chooses to paint a rabbit dressed in a frock coat escaping from the pot intended for him: the cabaret then becomes known as the Lapin à Gill ... soon transformed into the Agile Rabbit! Since that time, the reputation of this house established in the ancient village of Montmartre has never wavered. frame
