This painting, with a beautiful scenic effect, depicts a still life composed of an opulent display of objects, including a cushion with tassels, various drapes and fine curtains that are similarly embroidered and edged with refined trimmings and golden fringes; complete the unique composition of the precious metal vases and finely chiseled plates, embossed and gilded, as well as various parts of a dark parade armor with gold borders, a trunk, a drum and some fruits among which we recognize apples and bunches of white and black grapes.

Everything is theatrically well placed between the walls and the floor tiles, which are also dark in color to make the contrast of lights more effective and bring out the material consistency of the pictorial mixture used to describe the numerous objects of exquisite craftsmanship.

It is probably a kind of allegory that probably invited the viewer to meditate on the futility of vain glory and earthly riches.

The pictorial characters of the painting in question state that it was executed during the seventeenth century by a good artist of the Italian school, attentive to the details and preciousness of style derived from the teachings of the best contemporary Flemish masters and previous generations. The obvious post-Caravaggesque Roman cadences stand out, visible in the robust contrasts of light and in the dense and overflowing pictorial material: all reasons that allow the painting, pervaded by an accurate formal unity, to be assigned to Antonio Tibaldi (Rome, c. 1635 - documented until 1675), a talented epigonous painter of Francesco Fieravino known as the Maltese and therefore an appreciated painter of still lifes similar to those of his master and therefore characterized by well-chosen color combinations capable of describing redundant tapestries, curtains, musical instruments, books, clocks , fruit, flowers and sweets.

Tibaldi worked mainly in Rome, where his presence and his fame are testified by the many compositions that have been returned to him in recent times. In them he readapted the pictorial magisterium of the Maltese in a personal, delicate and specious creativity; these paintings, very similar to ours, were kept in the most important public and private collections, such as those of the Albani, Barberini, Chigi and Colonna.

It is also true that the paintings of the Roman master influenced the training of numerous still life painters both in Italy and in Europe; so that the importance that Tibaldi had as a trait d’union between Italian still life and those of countries beyond the mountains is becoming increasingly clear.

To confirm the attribution proposed here, it will be enough to compare our captivating Still Life with objects and fruit with other similar ones made by Antonio Tibaldi: for example the well-known Still Life with tapestries, metal vases and violin and Still Life with tapestries, vases of metal and bronze statue (both in Ajaccio, Musèe Fresh) and still life with a Maltese dog, tapestries, statue, clock and sheet music (signed 'Ant.Tibaldi', formerly London, Christie's, 18 December 1998, n.297 ).

In all these compositions, as in the one in question, a richly adorned painting emerges and insisted in the details outlined with surprising material thickness, specific characteristics of the best works performed by Antonio Tibaldi in the years of his full artistic maturity.
