"Fragment Of A Frieze Decorated With Musicians And Interlacing - Romanesque X-xith Century"
Corner fragment of a sculpted frieze, from the 10th or 11th century. Roman Art. Ferruginous sandstone. South of France, Languedoc, Occitanie. Featuring a very rare representation of a musician, playing a wind instrument. This one faces in his cartridge a character wearing a head covering, either also a musician or a religious character. On the left in a fragmented way another cartouche with a character. On the right forming the angle of the stone also appears a carved interlacing. Compare with the fragment of a frieze decorated with interlacing in the Louvre and dating from the same period. Under the stone and on its side the mortar joint (lime) is still present. There may have been an old reuse of this stone. Weight about 12kg. Do not hesitate to contact me if necessary. Quick and neat delivery.
