Very beautiful oil on panel of the village of Sambaïllo in Upper Guinea, signed Gaston Fontaine, 1938.

Born in Tours in 1907, died in 1999, Gaston Fontaine is an Africanist and Orientalist artist listed in the Benezit and in Lynne Thornton’s book "Africanist painters"... He made 3 trips to Africa in 1937, 1938 and 1948 to Senegal and Guinea.He exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris in 1940 in the fine arts section of the Salon de la France d'Outre Mer.Gaston Fontaine was also exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1931 and 1932.

This oil is countersigned on the back: “G Fontaine”, it is dated: “1938”, and located “village of Sambaïllo Haute-Guinée”.

Nicely framed and in very good condition the colors are bright, the touch is very beautiful.
