The surimono represents an Ama, both traditional and folkloric character who has fueled the imagination of many artists. The word ama literally means "woman or person of the sea". These Japanese underwater apnea fisherwomen were most famous as pearl fishermen. Traditionally, the ama dived half-naked, dressed in a simple loincloth.
