Painter and lithographer, he completed his studies at the Academy of Parma with Paolo Toschi and with the set designer Boccaccio. For economic reasons, but also due to the incomplete satisfaction in the teaching given, he detached himself from the masters and began to work on his own as a lithographer. His series of views of the castles of Parma and Piacentino met with great success. After taking part as a volunteer in the First War of Independence, in 1851 he stayed in Turin, Geneva and Paris, at the studio of Eugenio Ciceri, a renowned lithographer, where he could give himself completely to painting. The oriental-style genre then in vogue, especially with Decamps and Fromentin, attracted him and his work La sera exhibited at the 1853 Salon, gained wide acceptance. Two years later he took part, thanks to the protection of Théodore Chassériau, in the French diplomatic mission in Persia, led by Ambassador Bourée. He returns after a year, also traveling to Arabia. The stays in the East give new impetus to his favorite themes: landscapes and architecture with groupings of figures, scenes of costume and oriental-style everyday life. The expressive effectiveness of the very exact drawing, a happy balance in the composition, an elegant and elegant feeling, a solid and picturesque mixture of color almost always save him from falling into the photographic, to which his too objective aesthetic vision would lead him.
His works received several awards and the Hawk Hunting in Persia earned him the first class medal at the Salon in 1864.
In 1867 he went to Turkey and Greece and in 1869 he was in Spain with the painter Gérome. Of Italy, it is Venice that most involves him and he goes there numerous times, bringing back impressions that he fixes with delicate harmony. From 1870 he moved to Cavoretto and in 1897 his Sosta di Cavalieri Siriaci was presented to the Second Venice International.
