Pupil of Léon Bonnat, in 1894 he obtained the Grand Prix de Rome and in 1898 he began to exhibit at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he became a partner in 1904. In 1898 he obtained the second class medal and in 1900 the bronze medal at the Exposition Universal of Paris. Many important Parisian galleries begin to exhibit his works; among the best known are: Galerie Allard, Galerie Petit, Galerie Charpentier, Galerie Mona Lisa; but he achieved fame thanks to the projects for the decorations of some public buildings in the French capital and, above all, for the designs of the mosaics in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, in Montmartre.
He also works as an illustrator; his early works are in Symbolist and Art Nouveau styles, characterized by allegories and mythological subjects. Among the best known: "Le noces Corinthienne" (1902); “Eugénie Grandet” by H. Balzac (1911); “A simple heart” by G. Flaubert (1913); “Memories”, by Casanova de Seingalt; “Sappho” by Alphonse Daudet (1925); Goethe's “Werther” and many others.
In recent decades Leroux has been increasingly fascinated by female forms; he paints exquisite nudes, bathers and dancers with refined harmony and richness of detail.
He was awarded the title of Knight of the Legion of Honor; a year after his death, the Grand Palais in Paris organizes a retrospective in his honor.
