Provenience: Paris, Atelier Marie-Gabriel Biessy

In 1876 he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon where he attended the courses of F. Clément; two years later he exhibited at the Salon of the city. In 1879 he moved to Paris studying under the guidance of the artists Carolus-Duran and Luc-Olivier Merson.
Since 1882 his paintings have been admitted to the Paris Salon. Having begun to travel, especially in North and South America, in Senegal and in much of Europe, his works presented at the Salons are evidence of the atmospheres and scenes of everyday life observed during the travels.
Biessy soon abandons academic impositions, both as regards composition and color values, adopting more modern pictorial licenses, then considered revolutionary; his favorite subjects are the views of the capital and the suburbs at sunset and at night, of which he perfectly manages to communicate the charm and evocative atmosphere.
Some of these works are admitted to the Salon des artistes français, in which he participated in 1905, 1909 and 1913.
Until 1924 he exhibited regularly at the Salon de la Societé Nationale des Beaux-Arts; in 1883 he obtained an honorable mention and in 1895 he became a corporate member.
He received another honorable mention at the Universal Exposition of 1889 and the bronze medal in 1900, the year in which he decorated the Salone delle Feste at the Exposition.
The same year he was awarded the honor of Knight of the Legion of Honor and received the silver medal at the Crystal Palace in London.
In recent years of activity he was appointed director of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Cairo.
