Object description :

"André Fontenay De Saint-affrique (1913-1983), Théâtre De l'Atelier, Place Charles Dullin"
André de Fontenay de Saint-Affrique, self-taught painter, living in the Montmartre district, made painting a real priesthood. He left an abundant work carried out between 1938 and 1980 under various pseudonyms such as Arold Frime, Fontenay or Fontenay de Saint-Affrique.
His paintings, naive, endearing, colorful, restore the mythical district that was his, a village Paris with certain charm.

Here, in this view of Place Dancourt, future Place Charles Dullin, the famous Montmartrois theater is immortalized with Dostoyevsky's “The Idiot” on the bill.
The Atelier theater, built between 1812 and 1822 under Louis XVIII, was called, when it was inaugurated in November 1822, the “Montmartre”; bought by the great actor Charles Dullin in 1922, it was then renamed “Théâtre de l'Atelier”, Dullin will make it a place of excellence, revealing many authors including Marcel Achard, Jules Romain and Jean Cocteau.
This historic private theater, a place of "poetry and reflection" as Charles Dullin wished, has always been attached to the quality of the repertoire. The actors Michel Bouquet and Laurent Terzieff performed there.
