"Adrien Hamon (1875-1963) Ships In The Old Port Of Marseille"
Superb and majestic work of the painter of the sea Adrien Hamon. The work in very good condition measures in its pretty carved wooden frame 62 cm by 53 cm and 55 cm by 46 cm without the frame. It represents two bricks in the Old Port of Marseille facing the Cathedral of Notre Dame de la Major; Colorful and produced in a vigorous and vibrant touch, it is signed lower left and listed in Maurice Debled's book "Adrien Hamon, French painter - his life his work" Born in 1875 in Bégard, he left Bégard at a very young age and made his studies in Saint -Brieuc and Saint-Malo, where he discovers the turbulent sea bathing the ramparts of the corsair city. Engaged in the "Royal", Adrien Hamon travels around the world, and becomes a cartographer. Health problems forced him to stay ashore and he was reformed. From now on a passion occupies him, drawing and painting. He exhibited for the first time in Toulon in 1909. As a Breton of good stock, he knew and adored the sea. It was therefore quite naturally his great inspiration. Born in the land, Adrien Hamon is the painter of the sea. A solid and precise drawing, a happy installation, a skilful choice of tones according to the impressionist mode to which he remains faithful. The Breton settled in Rousillon, painted his native Brittany (Baie de Saint-Brieuc) and also Cape Béar, near Port-Vendres in the Pyrénées-Orientales. 1909: First exhibition in Toulon 1924: The State retains its canvas "The port of Collioure" which earned it the name of "Painter of the Sea" 1930: Member of the Salon of French Artists 1939: The town of Bégard pays tribute to his illustrious inhabitant by affixing a plaque to his birthplace at the Red Barrier and by inaugurating the avenue in his name, Adrien Hamon. 1945: Resumption of exhibitions at the Winter Salon 1956: Bégard greets the artist-painter for the second time, by inaugurating the stele bearing a bronze medallion by Raymond Sudre bearing the effigy of Adrien Hamon
