Léonor Fini was born in 1908 in Buenos Aires (Argentina) of Italian-Argentinian parents. She began to paint very early on, admiring first the painters of the Quattrocento, then the mannerists of the sixteenth century whose languid graces fascinated her. Léonor Fini studied in Trieste - where she spent her childhood and adolescence - under the influence of Carlo Carrà. She moved to Paris in 1933 and took part in the activities of the surrealist group, as she did in London - where she participated in the exhibition "Le Surréalisme" (Burlington Gallery, 1936) -, New York ("Fantastic Art, Dada , Surrealism ”, 1936), Zurich and Brussels. His first French exhibition, after a first Italian exhibition in Milan, will be organized in Paris in 1933. Eluard and de Chirico are the prefaces of his catalog for his first personal exhibition in New York (1938). A woman with a taste for the feather and a passion for the mask, she was always attracted to the stage and worked for the theater, the ballet, then the cinema. Draftsman, watercolourist and engraver, Léonor Fini has illustrated numerous works (“La Tempête” by Shakespeare, “Juliette” by Sade, “Les Fleurs du Mal” by Baudelaire, etc.). Léonor Fini's work, materially nourished by the classical tradition, successively showed the silhouettes of adolescent girls, fantastic landscapes, bald women, germinations in an almost abstract style, always marked by strangeness. There is always in her the ambiguity of the subject treated, an exacerbated femininity, often recourse to a morbid eroticism or the atmosphere of a cloudy climate. A very large retrospective of his work (paintings, gouaches, watercolors, drawings, engravings, bibliophile editions, masks) was dedicated to him at the Musée du Luxembourg (Paris, 1986). Léonor Fini died in 1996 in Paris.
