Oil on canvas Self-portrait in the mirror Signed: Cirou Dated 1934 Dim. 55 x 65cm Frame: 62 x 73cm Label on the back: CIROU - Rue de la Tombe Issoire, 37 Artist: Paul Cirou (1869-1951) He is a student at the school of fine arts in Dijon then at the Académie Julian in Paris. He began at the Salon of French Artists in 1898, with landscapes and portraits, in particular that of his father. He painted marsh landscapes during his Norman stays. He discovered Algeria in 1907 for health reasons and settled there in 1912. He lived and worked there until 1936. He painted the portrait of the Governor General and produced a set of colored works of orientalist inspiration. Back in Paris, he taught with his wife in his studio in rue de la Tombe-Issoire. He exhibits his Algerian works with success. He designed cartoons for large tapestries commissioned by the Manufacture des Gobelins, and the State bought him works such as The Kabyle water carriers, Flowers at the window, or Sur le lac Léman. In 1929, he took part in the Salon des Indépendants1. After the death of his wife in 1950, he returned to his family at Sainte-Mère-Église. He died in 1951 before being able to complete the project to produce frescoes on the theme of the Second World War.
