One day, Giuseppee and his younger brother Benjamin, the two sons of Jacob and Rachel, now deceased, return to Canaan to find their father and their half-brothers.

That evening, during dinner, Joseph recounts a dream in which he sees that all his brothers and his father will have to bow before him, Jacob understands that Joseph thanks to the power to predict the future through dreams is a real one. miracle of God and made him the most powerful of brothers. But unfortunately this decision drastically arouses the anger of the half-brothers, in particular the first-born Ruben and the second-born Simeone, to whom the other half-brothers report everything when they join them at the sheep yard on the day. even. after dinner. Reuben then decides, even against Jacob's will, to drive the cattle and sell them in Joseph's place; idea approved by all except by Joseph who left Benjamin in Canaan with Jacob and said that one should not contradict the will of his father.

Ruben is shocked while Simeon, after a brief fight with Joseph, knocks him unconscious in the hitting on the back with a stone; just then a caravan of slave sellers arrives who offer the brothers a high price for a slave, the brothers agree to sell Giuseppe, Ruben feels insecure but is convinced by Simeone who is completely proud of his horrible bravado.

After selling Joseph, Simeon and the other brothers stain the tunic torn from Joseph with lamb's blood and bring it to Jacob and Benjamin to make him believe that he is dead.

The painting belongs to the central phase of the 17th century French, when the search for the monumentality of the figures and the balance of the composition prevailed over the extravagance of the brushstroke and the contrasts of tones.

The main characteristics of the painting in this painting are the airy width of the panoramas and the feeling of diffused luminosity which recall free French art with a slight neoclassical note.
