This extraordinary painting of a fantastic landscape is undoubtedly the work of the famous Genoese painter Alessandro Magnasco, known as Lissandrino because of his small size. According to the characteristic dictates of his landscape painting, it takes place in a forest with fairytale tones but subtly dark and disturbing. Strange figures, portrayed with unmistakable features, roam the woods while two inevitable brothers take a cool rest by a stream. Illuminated by a glimpse of light between the branches of the trees, a ruined castle on a cliff. The large canvas while respecting all the pictorial prerogatives of the author, expresses an atmosphere less dramatic than his usual works with a much more accentuated luminosity. This, associated with a notable scenographic commitment, leads us to consider the painting as the result of a moment of inner peace of his restless mind. The result is excellent, particularly interesting and enjoyable work. Magnasco remains one of the most brilliant and talented authors of 18th century Italian painting and is present with his most significant works in all the most important international museums, including the Uffizi, the Louvre, the Prado, the 'Hermitage and the Metropolitan.
