"Osculatory - Kiss Of Peace In Ivory"
Osculatory (or Kiss of Peace) convex ivory carved in bas-relief on a squared background, representing the Virgin and Child. This object of devotion, used in the Catholic liturgy and whose use is now lost, symbolized, through the kiss, the reconciliation of God with men, made possible by the sacrifice on The Cross of the Son made man. This osculatory representing Mary reminds us that she also plays a role of intercession. The Virgin holds the Child on her left arm, who makes a gesture of tenderness shaking her Mother's right hand. The back is hollowed out to fix a handle, here missing, which made it easier to grip. This liturgical object, normally small in size, is often made of a noble material, such as ivory, silver, rare carved wood.
