Object description :

"Large Persian Timurid Corner Tile Shard Cuerda Seca XVth Cty"
Large fragment / ceramic corner shard tile CUERDA CECA or said "with black line" with geometric design, in particular stars.
We can see very clearly on the back the (5) fingers of the ceramist traces who forced the raw tile - before its firing, to give it its curved shape, creating an angle to allow it to be adapted to its future destination.

It seems to me to be rather of Persian origin, TIMOURID (Timurid Empire 1405-1507) although one can also think of Spanish origin of the same period, consecutive to the Arab Conquests in Spain.

"The expression cuerda seca is used to designate a ceramic decoration in which the enamels are isolated by an engraved line and a material of different composition, gave them relief. Following the route of ceramic, which is that of expansion Muslim, the technique of cuerda seca appears in Spain in 11th and 12th centuries in Málaga; the line is a little thicker than in the East. On 16th century, this technique is called cuerda seca ("dry rope"), because the line which isolates enamels, a manganese oxide and oil compound, becomes broad like a cord. The colors are brown, green, blue, light ocher and white, to which we add, in the East, yellow and red after the 15th century. "

“When glazes of different colors are applied to a ceramic surface, the glazes tend to work together during the firing process. In the cuerda seca technique, the water-soluble glazes are separated on the surface by fine lines of glaze. 'a fatty substance to keep them from running out of their demarcated areas. A dark pigment like manganese carbonate is usually mixed with the fat to produce a dark line around each colored area. "

Please check last photos for 3 Timouide tiles (first one from British Museum collection) then Spanish tiles using same technique.
