A Louis XVI caned office chair stamped by Lebas – 18th century.
Elegant Louis XVI period office armchair stamped by Jean Baptiste Lebas in carved, molded and waxed beechwood, dark cane; with a curved gondola shape, it is as enveloping as it is harmonious. The woodwork of this comfortable office chair runs in a single stream so that its back, very flared seems to extend to the fluted brackets while making body to the belt by their implementations in the plumb of the front foot. Cubic connecting dice sculpted with clovers prolong the visual by unifying the consoles, the crosspieces of the belt and the base. The latter is made of four legs; its straight front legs close the set. All four are tapered with flutes (rudentées for the front ones), strangled in their pinched tops at their bases. Having vocation to be seen all faces, a great care is brought to the least details. One notices with the back of the amounts, the vertical bands which are used to obturate of wood the cavity of fixing of the cane. The seat racket also darkened cane is decorated with a tile (cushion) of chocolate morocco. It is to note the great care brought to the elements of connection of an irreproachable quality. Balance, nervousness, elegance, comfort and quality are the most appropriate terms for this neoclassical chair very representative of the first period of the reign of Louis XVI. Jean-Baptiste LEBAS, received master on July 29, 1756, he delivers seats of "careful manufacture" to a prestigious clientele such as the Countess du Barry or the Count of Artois. Many French and foreign museums, such as the Louvre, Versailles and the Metropolitan Museum of New York, preserve pieces of his production. (Kjellberg, 1989, pp. 489 and 490). A second alcantara tile is also available.
