Portrait Of Madame De Maintenon (presumed ) 17th Louis XIV flag

Object description :

"Portrait Of Madame De Maintenon (presumed ) 17th Louis XIV"
Very beautiful oil on canvas of the seventeenth, presumed portrait of Madame de Maintenon.
In its imposing and beautiful wooden frame, work of the south of France of the seventeenth. (slight lack see photos).
Of great quality this portrait is to be compared with the painting of Pierre Mignard present in the collection of the Palace of Versailles (see photo).
Just as in the composition of Mignard’s painting, in order to underline her piety, Madame de Maintenon is represented with the Virgin’s clothes, which recalls the painter’s famous “Mignardes”.

Like all the paintings I propose.I don’t touch them.I leave it as I discovered it and leave the choice to the buyer to have it restored or not. This painting is in good condition, in its juice.A cleaning would be useful to bring out the beautiful colors of origin, and the finesse of the portrait including the hair.

Provenance: collection of the Marquis de Lagoy, by descent.

Dimension with frame: 79 x 70 cm
Dimension without frame: 59,5 x 50,5 cm

Madame de Maintenon, born Françoise d'Aubigné, baptized on November 28, 1635 in Niort and died on April 15, 1719 at the Maison Royale de Saint-Louis in Saint-Cyr, is a French lady of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries who was the wife then the widow of Paul Scarron.
The last great female figure of the reign of Louis XIV, Madame de Maintenon, recommended by Madame de Montespan, first assumed the role of governess of the bastard children of the sovereign before becoming the secret wife of the king. She raised their children, far from the court. But Madame de Maintenon beat the favorite in the king’s heart. She secretly became the wife of the Sun King after the death of Queen Marie-Thérèse in 1683. It then had an influence on the king, the extent of which is still difficult to discern today.

Pierre Mignard, French classical painter of the seventeenth century, is the pupil of Simon Vouet. He meets Charles Lebrun, Eustache Le Sueur and Charles-Alphonse du Fresnoy with whom he links. He returned to Italy, where he went in 1635 and spent more than twenty years. In the cosmopolitan and open Roman milieu, the young painter first multiplied his experiments (dotted with a few masterpieces). But soon enough, and without denying the various achievements of his training, he opted for the great classicism inaugurated by Raphael and then relayed by the Carrache and their brilliant disciples.
Recognized in Rome as one of the main champions of this movement, Mignard accumulated public success: his fresco of the Annunciation at Saint-Charles-aux-Quatre-Fontaines, his Saint Charles Borromeo is the religious painting of the seventeenth century French most often reproduced by the print, and his three Virgins to the Child engraved by François de Poilly are famous throughout Europe under the name of «Mignardes».Recalled by the Sun King, it is a major artist who finds Paris in 1658. At the request of Colbert himself, he created portraits of Louis XIV and the decoration of a chapel at Saint-Eustache.Finally, from 1677, he painted for Monsieur, brother of the king, at the Château de Saint-Cloud, two salons and especially the gallery of Apollo which will immediately serve as a model for the Grand Gallery of Versailles. He participated in the decoration of the Palace of Versailles.
In June 1687 he was ennobled by the king who, in 1690, on the death of Charles Le Brun, appointed him his first painter, made him director of the royal manufactures and made him enter the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture as director.
