""skaters On A Frozen Lake", Dutch School From The End Of The 16th Century"
Oil on canvas depicting "Skaters on a frozen lake", Dutch school from the end of the 16th century. Without frame, with its original frame. Private collection. Dimensions: h. 92 cm x l. 128 cm. In perfect condition. This painting is in the tradition of the works of Pieter Bruegel said the Elder (1525-1569), in particular for his painting "Hunters in the snow" kept in Vienna. Bruegel made these snowy landscapes very popular with skaters. They have been widely copied from his son Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1565-1636) and by other painters such as Jacob Grimmer (1525-1590). So there is a proliferation of this kind of paintings in Holland. Could it be because the winters are harsh or long? It is more of a fad. The taste of a well-off public for buying paintings prompted the painters of this period to multiply this kind of scenes of which our painting is perfect and very good example.
