Charming 19th century bronze representing the wounded gladiator or the dying galat.
the statue from which our bronze is inspired is in the Capitoline Museum in Rome and is a Roman marble copy of a Gallic original now lost, commissioned between 230 and 220 BC by Attalus I of Pergamon, to commemorate his victory on the Gauls.
the statue represents with great realism the agony of a Gallic warrior and at the same time marks the courage of his opponents of the Romans.
our bronze is a miniature bronze of this famous sculpture but it is treated with a lot of grace and finesse!
the recovery in carving is really superb and lets perceive the features of the Galatian warrior with his hair and his bushy mustache in his agony, despite its small dimensions the suffering can be read on his face and we even see the torque necklace around his neck .
we can even see his wound from which tears of blood are escaping on his side. the attitude is extremely well rendered and we find the criteria specific to the original work.
the base is extremely well worked with the sword and the weapons of the galatian.
the patina is really superb and has not been altered. the whole was installed on a beautiful plinth in red rancid marble.
a very beautiful miniature classical bronze with a lot of presence.
