Object description :

"Guglielmo Della Porta (1515-1577) Christ With Ties, Bronze"
Christ with lost wax bronze links Height: 11.5 cm Width: 4 cm Depth: 9 cm Stripped of his clothes, sitting on the rock of Golgotha, Jesus, his mouth half open, turns his gaze down on his left side , while joining his hands in the opposite direction, in a pathetic rotational motion, his raised right heel brushing his left calf, finishing the image of it in a languidly unstable pose. If this small bronze borrows here a pose traditionally described in sculpture since the end of the Middle Ages, its small size, precious, and especially the elongation of its barrel, combining thinness, tapered limbs and protruding musculature, invite to locate the invention in mannerist Italy. The movement is forced, complicated, the delicacy of details, from the movement of the toes to the curls of the hair and the beard invite to think of the art of Jacopo Sansovino or Guglielmo della Porta. It is particularly to the latter that we attribute our model. The richness of its modeling, the precision of its carving as well as the quality of its patina are all elements which suppose an immediate proximity with the master, famous for having made in particular bronze crucifixes taking again the Michelangélesque canon. From the middle of the 16th century, his Roman workshop produced private devotional works in bronze. If his model of Christ has been reproduced many times, especially until the 17th century, our Christ in the bonds constitutes on the other hand the much rarer manifestation of an intimate representation, the object inviting to manipulation to admire its three-dimensionality, elusive in the only frozen gaze. Finally, by the elongated features of his face, his hair with skilfully wavy curls, his fine, unctuous and pointed beard, as by the general canon, he evokes Christ carrying the cross of the Estense Gallery (Modena), given to Sansovino by Planiscig but returned to Della Porta by Bruce Boucher.
