Bronze statue representing the Blessed Virgin created by sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet and named Virgin of Bethlehem, shown crushing the serpent (dominating sin), a fleur-de-lis pressed against her symbol of purity. Produced at the very beginning of the 20th century (1900/1910), this particularly successful work (probably due to the quality of its carving) expresses solemnity and depth. Original dark patina, brown / red marble base, good general condition according to its time. Signature and numbering on the base. Model presented without its halo. The marble base is included in the height indicated. Emmanuel Frémiet (1824/1910) was born in Paris, training was done with his uncle the sculptor Rude, a brilliant student, he presented his first works at the Salon from 1843, he received numerous awards until the Grand Prix in 1900. Medalist of the Legion of Honor, member of the institute, he was also professor of drawing at the Jardin des Plantes until the end of his life. His most famous works: Joan of Arc on horseback at the Place des Pyramides, Saint-Michel at the top of the abbey, Louis d'Orléans at the Château de Pierrefonds….
