Let us recall in passing that these pitchers were measures for wine under the Old regime. The capacity of those used in inns, drinking establishments, etc., had to be checked periodically by the royal or ecclesiastical power to assure "good measure" to the consumer, but in fact, this regulation was little applied and the pitchers which wear gauging punches are very rare. The metric system appeared at the very beginning of the 19th century and took several decades to establish itself due to the resistance to change shown by users, but little by little these uniform cylindrical measurements would eventually replace the pitchers which presented, it is true, a variety of interesting shapes and characteristics of their place of manufacture, but also an infinite number of different gauges from one city to another and often even from one village to another, however close they may be.
