Guérin was born on March 13, 1774 in Paris and died in Rome on July 16, 1833. He was, at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the following century, a brilliant artist whose work can be compared to that of David. When he died in 1833, the painter bequeathed some of his works to some of his most loyal students.
Julien Potier was entrusted by the master with the execution of his will, with the task of sharing among his students the works that remained in his possession.
