Object description :

"Pair Of Engravings - Breton Fisherwomen With Fishes"
Pair of engravings probably dating from the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century.
Representation of two Breton fish merchants in the 19th century.
Artworks sold framed under glass.

At the end of the 19th century, the expansion of railroads and canneries in Brittany allowed Breton fishing to access the national market. It was at this time that Brittany became the leading sea fishing region in France.

While sea fishing was on activity reserved for men, women were rather specialized in shore fishing or other activities on land such as drying and fish work back in the factories, selling or even repairing nets for boats.

These two fisherwomen and merchants are represented in opposite attitudes: while one has crossed arms and an empty basket, the other stands in a more energetic posture, with her basket full of fish, her body attitude underlying the heaviness of the basket she carries on her back.
