Complete catalog on: www.nice-antiques.com Milivoj Uzelac, painter, bohemian and seditious spirit, was born on July 27, 1897. From 1903 to 1911 his family lived in Banja Luka, where he made a lasting bond with Vilko Gecan. After his father's death in 1912, the family moved to Zagreb, where Uzelac continued his education at the 2nd Modern High School while attending the private painting school under the guidance of Tomislav Krizman. In 1913 he enrolled at the Provisional High School for Art, later the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, in the class of Professor Oton Ivekovic. But after a year already he will set sail because of too rigid academic rules which were not to please him. The four years of war were spent in Prague, where Vilko Gecan joined him in 1918. Uzelac and Gecan then returned to Zagreb and took part in the 7th Spring Fair. It was there that they distinguished themselves among the young expressionists by joining the current trends in European art.The period known as the Prague-Zagreb phase (1915-1923), in which expressionist tendencies manifested themselves and constructivists, will last until he goes to Geneva to the prestigious International Exhibition of Modern Art. In 1923, Uzelac turns his steps towards France where he will remain until his death. It was only in his last years that he multiplied his visits to his homeland. Uzelac, alongside Gecan and Trepse, belonged to the first wave of modernist artistic trends in Croatia, the most important. His impressive work, which spans almost six decades and which touches a particular sensual note, is highly rated but insufficiently known to young people. (His last retrospective in Zagreb was held in 1971 at the Gallery of Modern Art in Zagreb). Text written by brunorosar in the dicocroate2 site
