Object description :

"Console In The Greek-neoclassical Louis XVI Period Around 1781."
Elegant four-legged console in carved linden wood, openwork and burnished gilded and matted with black Sablé marble entablature; Trapezoidal in shape with a generous curve just as convex as concave, this console is located halfway between the so-called Greek and neoclassical styles, from the Louis XVI period around 1781-1785. The belt worked with openwork is carved on its three faces. Its decor, which is as elegant as it is atypical, consists of the most martial asymmetrical ornaments. The main crosspiece is embellished in its middle part with a cartridge of windings from which emerges in a slatted way, the martial attributes of the crown of France; such as the immaculate royal pavilion associated with the pennant of the princes of the House of France. Both floating on a bundle of cannons, cannonballs and battle drums, signifying the symbol of the French expeditionary force during the United States War of Independence. This more martial symbol is embellished with multiple olive branches loaded with fruit and foliage as dense as serrated; inexhaustible source of strength and generosity, it symbolizes sustainability and wisdom. The side crosspieces, all in curve and against sinuous curve, are carved with openwork but in a divergent way. The one on the right is provided with a beam where ax, shield and torch mingle with the same decoration of olive branches but accompanied by bundles of foliage signifying prosperity. The left crossbar is adorned with elements of armor such as helmet, breastplate and arm armband but always embellished with olive branches and bundles of foliage. The belt rests on a four-legged base. Each of the feet is divided into two parts, the upper part is linear with foliage. The lower part for its part is concave with a step, its end being raised by a plant winding; both are unified by a Greek ribbon following the profile of the base. Which is topped with an acanthus leaf unifying crosspieces and base. Dimension width 114.5cm - Depth 59.5cm - Height 82.7cm.
