"Couple Of Chinese Dignitaries In Polychrome Wood Early XX Eme Century"
The Emperor and Empress of China, beautiful couple of Chinese dignitaries or emperors in polychrome and gilded carved wood dating from the beginning of the 20th century.
These two sculptures are very beautifully carved and therefore probably represent a Chinese Emperor and his Empress sitting on their throne.
they are both dressed in rich golden clothes very finely carved with cloud patterns etc ...
the rest of their clothes are painted in blue and green color, adorned with floral motifs.
both are wearing Hats, of which that of the Empress is particularly well worked.
the faces of the two dignitaries are imbued with tranquility and wisdom.
their thrones are soberly carved and red in color.
they are in good general condition despite some small lack of polychromy and a horizontal slit on the empress starting from its base and stopping at the waist over about 5 cm long, and which is stabilized. The various small losses of polychromy and this slit on the Empress could lead us to believe that it is perhaps a question of a slightly older work.
in any case, it is a rare example of a representation of Chinese emperors in polychrome and gilded wood, a rather surprising and unexpected couple.
dimensions:
31 cm high for the emperor and 14 cm by 15 cm for the base.
27 cm high for the empress and 12.5 cm by 10 cm for the base.
