Object description :

"Fireback With The Arms Of The Archdiocese Of Besançon (doubs)"
Fireback with the arms of the archbishopric of Besançon (Doubs), decorated with three coats of arms of the city *, a turned X-shaped brace and ecclesiastical cords with 15 archbishop's tassels. Two columns of Hercules frame its iconography. In 1537, Charles Quint, Emperor of the Romans and of the County of Burgundy (approximately today Franche-Comté) attributed to Besançon, for coat of arms, its current coat of arms with the motto "ultinam" (please God). The city is then strategic, on the border of the Holy Roman Empire (in particular of the hereditary territories of Hasbourg) and of the kingdom of France. In 1793, during the French Revolution, the municipal coat of arms was removed. In 1804, Napoleon restored them with an armorial to the lion of Burgundy, in place of the eagle, then reserved for the imperial Napoleonic coat of arms. In 1815, during the Restoration, the original coat of arms was restored by royal decree. * Shield: Or with an eagle Sable, holding in its talons two columns Gules debruising on the wings. Supports: Two Pillars of Hercules. It should be noted a crack in the lower part. Its weight is 76 kg. You can visit our site:
