"Old Tibetan Thangka Tsongkhapa Nineteenth Century"
A thangka, also spelled “tangka”, “thanka”, or “tanka”, literally “something you roll”, “roll”, is a painting, drawing, or fabric on canvas originating in India and characteristic of Tibetan Buddhist culture.
Thangkas are most often intended to serve as a support for meditation.
Since these thangkas were intended to travel with their owners, they were protected by a precious fabric.
This Thangka from the 19th century represents the founder of the Gelukpa School (Tsongkhapa) he sits in the center with his hands in the shape of dharmachakra mudra, he is dressed in an embroidered dress, on his right figure his attribute the flaming sword. Above is Buddha Shakyamuni, the surrounding scenes recount the stories of Tsongkhapa’s life, all in a golden orange landscape.
The tangka is painted on ancient handmade paper. It is surrounded by silky embroidered fabrics.
On the back there is a trace of a red wax stamp according to the imported objects.
