A large French financial court still in operation today, the Cour des Comptes is in fact the heir to the Chamber of Accounts created by the Vivier-en-Brie ordinance in 1320 by Philippe V of France.

Currently located rue Cambon in Paris, the Cour des Comptes previously sat at the Orsay Palace until it was burnt down during the Paris Commune in 1871.
From 1810 to 1898, the Palais d´Orsay occupied the current site of the Orsay Museum on the Quai d´Orsay in Paris. This building was built on the initiative of Napoleon I between 1810 and 1838 and the work was directed by Jacques-Charles Bonnard and then by Jacques Lacornée.
Initially intended for the Ministry of External Relations, the Palace was assigned to the Council of State which moved to the ground floor in 1840 and which was joined by the Cour des Comptes on the first floor in 1842.
During the night of May 23-24, 1871, the Orsay Palace was set on fire by the Communards.
Our painting, probably depicting the great hall of the Council of State, is therefore a moving testimony of the appearance that the place could present in 1888, that is to say seventeen years after the fire and ten years before the final destruction of the ruins of the Palais d'Orsay.
In fact, in 1898, the Paris-Orléans Company erected its new terminus station, the Orsay station, in place of the Orsay Palace, in anticipation of the Universal Exhibition of 1900; train-station that we all know well today as its new museum destination: the Orsay Museum.
