Superb portrait of a man with a hat by the Marseille artist François Maury (1861-1933). The work, with a vigorous and lively touch, is in very good condition. It measures in its pretty golden carved frame 49 cm by 41 cm and 35 cm by 27 cm without the frame. It is signed lower right. Pupil of Magaud at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Marseille, he was, according to André Alauzen in his Dictionary of Painters of the Provençal School, "a very good painter knowing his profession well". At the Museum of Fine Arts in Marseille: "village festival of 1902"
