Hans Rottenhammer (1564-1624) - Sainte-madeleine flag

Object description :

"Hans Rottenhammer (1564-1624) - Sainte-madeleine"
Sainte-Madeleine penitente
Oil on copper
Hans Rottenhammer is a Bavarian painter whose specialty is small format painting. Looking at this Sainte-Madeleine and the landscape, we feel a Venetian inspiration used voluntarily by the artist. Rottenhammer represents here all the iconographic attributes of a penitent Saint Magdalene. Almost completely naked, she holds a skull in her hand, a symbol of vanity. She also sits at the foot of a cross with an open book, her eyes looking up to emphasize her relationship to Heaven.
