CLÉMENT-SERVEAU (1886-1972): "Flowers in a vase", gouache on sheet of wood veneer, signed lower left dim: 35 x 25 cm Henri Clément Serveau, dit Clément-Serveau (Paris 10th, June 29, 1886 - Paris 8th, July 8, 1972) is a French painter, draftsman, engraver and illustrator. Biography Henri Clément Serveau successively followed courses at the National School of Decorative Arts and then at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris from 1904 to 1914. He began in 1905 at the Salon des Indépendants and then participated in the Salons of French Artists , at the Salons d'Automne, at the Salons des Tuileries. In 1907-1909, he served in the 15th battalion of foot hunters in the Vosges at Remiremont. He is enrolled in the municipal drawing school headed by Mr. Rondot. When the prizes were distributed in July 1908, he was classified as an exhibition. Idem on July 29, 1909. Among the members of the jury is the architect Charles Hindermeyer. Serveau was 21, Miss Yvette Hindermeyer was 17. They married in 1913 in Remiremont. Subsequently, his stays in Remiremont were frequent, he produced many paintings, landscapes and portraits there. Artistic director of Ferenczi editions from 1919, he illustrates, using the technique of engraved wood, many works (seventy-eight) of the Modern Illustrated Book. Colette was the literary director for several years. He also participates in around thirty other works. He received a medal of honor in 1920, bronze in 1921, silver in 1926 and finally gold in 1929. For the monuments to the dead designed by his stepfather Charles Hindermeyer in the Remiremont region, he created the cartons of mosaics for: Le Syndicat in 1923, Ventron in 1923, Venetian enamels executed by Moro-Lin, Rupt-sur-Moselle in 1923 by the Mauméjean brothers, mosaicists in Paris, and La Bresse in 1923, exhibited at the Salon the same year, also produced by the Mauméjean brothers. Thanks to his master Luc-Olivier Merson, he creates models of banknotes. He designed or engraved forty-two French or foreign postage stamps from 1956 to 1970. In September 1933, he remarried in Paris 9th arrondissement with Sara Sophie Wisoume (born in Smolensk in January 1903). After a trip to Greece in 1934, he devoted himself to post-cubism. He participated in numerous exhibitions such as in Langres in 1935 alongside the naturalist painters of Franche-Comté Robert Fernier and Georges Fréset, or at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris. He was named Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1936. He also produced a large number of frescoes, one of which was six meters by three at the Lycée de Meaux, where he was a student. He directs the School of Frescoes at the National School of Fine Arts, decorates the tourism pavilion at the Universal Exhibition of 1937. He participates in numerous exhibitions of French art (Sweden, London, United States, Canada ...) where each time he produces and sells works. In 1948, he exhibited at the Barreiro Gallery1. He died in Paris on July 8, 1972, he was buried in the cemetery of Bourbonne-les-Bains where he owned a house in rue Vellonne. A room in the local museum is dedicated to him. (Wikipedia)
