"Hendrick Van Balen (1575-1632) And Workshop - Flowers And Cupid"
Flowers and Cupid
Oil on parquet panel
Dimensions: 25.5 x 20.5 cm

Specializing in mythological or religious scenes with idyllic decor, Hendrick van Balen travels to Italy, where he visited Rome and Venice. There, he met the German painter Hans Rottenhammer. On his return, he opened an engraving workshop in Antwerp where he produced works by Jan Brueghel the Younger and Joos de Momper.
He collaborated very frequently with Jan Brueghel, 7 years his elder, for the execution of mythological scenes imbued with finesse and delicacy. Our painting is very probably a study for a painting whose theme would relate to Flora, the divinity of fertility.
