"Pair Of Still Lifes Of Flowers"
Golden metal vase with flowers placed on a wooden shelf White and blue ceramic vase with flowers placed on a stone shelf This pair of refined still lifes, as confirmed by Prof. Bellesi (expertise of 7 2 2021) , are undoubtedly to be attributed to the happiest phase of our Master's activity, to be dated on the basis of the comparison with the works documented in the eighties of the seventeenth century. The pair of paintings executed with admirable executive talent, rich in preciousness and skillful brushstrokes, have an admirable pictorial layer obtained through lacquers and enamels. Andrea Scacciati painter of the House of the Medici, favored in a particular way by the Grand Duchess Vittoria della Rovere but also very appreciated by the brothers of the Grand Duke Ferdinando II, had a figurative culture which reconciles the preciousness of the contemporary Flemish and Dutch painters , not forgetting the links with the works of Mario de Fiori. The two works presented here are characterized as two still lifes filled with rare and precious flowers alongside other more common species, but, as Professor Bellesi writes, they appear "animated almost with a life of their own, flowers, described mainly with long, serpentine stems and with expressive corollas almost communicating with each other, they present a magnificent mixture of botanical varieties. ”These two small masterpieces by maestro Andrea Scacciati with Bartolomeo Bimbi from the still life of the Florentine Baroque period, can easily be compared in particular to the series of four canvases, Chinese porcelain catinelle with flowers on stone shelves, now kept in the Palazzo di Montecitorio in Rome, executed in 1683 for the furniture of the Medici villa by Poggio Imperiale (for these see S. Bellesi, Andrea Scacciati, op. cit., pp. 122-123 nos 34-37; with previous bibliography), and are here i considered particularly important works to add to the Master's catalog. Note again that the two vessels probably hide an enigma which is difficult to decipher today, in fact in the blue and white porcelain bowl we can see an Arab Phoenix and in the golden vase a heron is in relief, a vase is resting on a very smooth shelf background, the other on a crumbling stone shelf. Contemporary frames in gilded wood. Excellent state of conservation.
