Object description :

"Andy Warhol 2 Dollars Jefferson 1976"
Worship! ... A central figure in Pop Art, of which he was one of the pioneers, Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was known throughout the world for his work as a painter, music producer, author, avant-garde films, and for his connections with intellectuals, Hollywood celebrities and rich aristocrats. For Andy Warhol: «Making money is art!» This real Jefferson $2 green note dates from 1976. It was authenticated by Warhol himself when he had it obliterated and stamped via the American Post using a 13-cent stamp bearing the American flag.
By having it validated in April 1976 in Gloucester (United States city, Massachusetts) and by marking it with his legendary signature, Andy Warhol voluntarily makes each of these notes a unique and original coin. The idea that each thing or object of everyday life can have a mercantile value and an artistic value, takes its meaning. Andy Warhol seeking with Pop Art to get out of ordinary objects, that are consumer goods, of their primary use to make works of art.
His first exhibition, Pop Art en solo, featured his 100 Soup Cans, 100 Coke Bottles and 100 Dollar Bills. For Warhol: "Everyone has their own America, and then pieces of an imaginary America that you think you’re there but don’t see..." The two-dollar note is rather unknown since it is at least used in the United States. Of all the printed notes, its production represents only 1% of those issued by the American Bank.
On the front is Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States of America. The reverse is partly the famous painting by John Trumbull, “The Declaration of Independence”. It refers to the American Revolution of 1776 when the British colonies seceded against the United Kingdom. The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776. The most sought-after 2-dollar note is the 1976 note in reference to the bicentennial celebration of independence that it symbolizes.
The famous "Jefferson 2 dollar note" is perhaps today the only original work still accessible from this global icon of contemporary art of the twentieth century. Andy Warhol’s works are exhibited all over the world in the largest museums of modern and contemporary art.
