Claude GILLOT is known as a painter and above all as an engraver. "He worked early in his father's workshop where he was able to study decoration in particular, then went up to Paris around 1691-1693, where he joined Jean-Baptiste Cornelle workshop, who taught him to wield the tip and introduced him to the academic genre, which he quickly abandoned to follow his fantasy. Gillot opened quickly his own workshop where he had as a pupil Antoine WATTEAU for several years and until 1708, on which he will let a clear influence...

With mocking verve, he created a spiritual cheerfulness of mythological scenes, which he renewed thanks to his talent as an improviser, his Bachanals, his Satyrs Life of the Satyrs, his two Sabats, and numerous ornamental drawings deriding allegory, religion and Morality.
Between 1704 and 1718 he specialized mainly in the Italian Comedy engravings, harlequins and the rest, and thethe carnival theatres burlesque scenes he enjoyed frequenting.

Please note its monographic book "Claude GILLOT (1673-1722), Comédies, Sabats et autres sujets curieux", edition SOMOGY 1999
