Object description :

"Chocolate Pot, Silver, Jean Schoutheer, Dunkirk, 1754-1755"
  • Chocolate pot
  • Hammered, melted and chiseled sterling silver
  • By Jean Schoutheer, master silversmith of c. 1746-1790
  • Dunkirk, 1754-1755
  • High: 29cm; Weight: 921g & 975g (gross)
  • Very good condition
  • Provenance: Sotheby's sale of March 11, 1999 n ° 994,
  • Chocolate pot with a bulging belly rests on three winding feet. The solid silver body is adorned with a wide threaded throat at the neck. The covered five-sided spout is adorned with half-applied fillets, under which a shell in relief on a matte bottom takes place. The hinged, bell-shaped lid, with a gadrooned border, is decorated with a fretel in the shape of a leaf flower bud on a terrace with radiant gadroons. The attachments of the three feet are stylized shells taking up from the terrace of the fretel, the feet ending in coiled shells going up on chamfered rods. The turned ebony handle attaches to the body with a mesh hood and swelling sleeve.
  • This chocolate pot is the typical production model of one of the most productive goldsmiths: a coffee maker dating from 1753, very similar to it, is distinguished only by the fretel seed and a cylindrical sleeve (Coll. D'Allemagne, Château de Laarne n ° 167, Pfister & Messiant p.89 photo B). If the decoration of the spout is largely inspired by Parisian models of the period, the attachments of the feet andfeet are characteristic of the works of Guillaume Anguilles, his widow and other silversmiths from Dunkirk. This chocolate pot is distinguished from other models by the swollen sleeve and a bouquet-shaped fretel, the only elements known in Dunkirk.
  • Jean Schoutheer, born in 1716, he was a master silversmith from 1746 to 1790, paying a capitation of 10Lt then 15Lt from 1773; two of his sons will work with him. The numerous works preserved show a great diversity of production: stewing spoons, cutlery, feeding bottle, coffee makers, chocolate pots, stoves, and religious goldsmith's work ...
  • Hallmarks: Silversmith(under the body and in the lid): a fleur-de-lis, I, a point, S, surmounted by a crown with three points, for Jean Schoutheer ([1], n ° 472d, [3] p.87); Warden's mark (under the body): F under an archiducal crown,Dunkirk, 1754-1755 ([3], p.59); Dunkirk'smark(under the body): crowned dolphin, Dunkirk, circa 1730-1755 ([1], n ° 467b & [3], p.63); inside the three feet: J S crowned for the small goldsmith's hallmark ([3], p.87).
