Interesting Italian bronze dating from the first half of the 19th century probably a memory of the great tower and representing the torture of Marsyas.
this bronze therefore represents tortured Marsyas, in Greek mythology Marsyas was a silenus who having picked up the aulos invented by Athena played it with such grace that he captivated his audience declaring that he had more talent than Apollo himself .
Apollo challenged Marsyas to a musical joust and the muses declared Apollo the winner.
the god to punish Marsyas for his arrogance and his excessiveness had him flayed alive by a Scythian slave (the flayer or the Arrotino) by tying him to a tree.
his skin was nailed to a pine tree.
