César was born in Marseille in 1921. At 12, he left the municipal school to help his father, a cooper. At fifteen, he was enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Marseille. He attended evening drawing classes, then became interested in sculpture until 1939. In 1942, he received a scholarship and moved to Paris. He will attend, for ten years and in his own way, the School of Fine Arts; he works in the workshops of Gaumont and Alfred Jeanniot and will be named Grand Massier of the said school. At that time he lived in the same house as Alberto Giacometti. In 1944, short of resources, he returned to Marseille, to join Paris again the following year. The 1950s showcase his work and his first exhibitions date from this period. One of his works ("The Fish") returned to the Museum of Modern Art in Paris in 1955. From now on, he exhibits unceasingly, participating in numerous Salons in France and abroad. Caesar receives many awards there. His work is the subject of a host of personal exhibitions (Japan, United States, Holland, France, Italy, etc.). Important retrospectives will come later. In 1970, he was appointed head of workshop professor at the School of Fine Arts of the City of Paris. César, throughout his life, will be driven by “love of the profession” and by an extraordinary desire to innovate. The man's humor is not lacking and shines through in his work. Pablo Picasso is his major reference, but also Alberto Giacometti, Germaine Richier, Pablo Gargallo and Julio Gonzales. It will reach the maturity of its style and social recognition at the end of the 50s. The famous Compressions, assimilated by some to a dada gesture, were born in 1960; they will cause scandals. Giant Footprints (thumb, breast, etc.), the use of polyurethane, Expansions, then the time for shows of his art that he likes to give will come. Caesar died in Paris in 1998.
