Object description :

"Cleopatra Dissolving A Pearl, France, Circa 1630"
Oil on parquet panel representing an episode of one of the banquets of Queen Cleopatra. Pliny the Elder recounts that the queen ended one of her famous dinners by dissolving one of the two largest twin pearls in the world in vinegar, and drank this drink. This episode has become a usual representation in the iconography of Cleopatra, illustrating the theme of waste as much as the irresistible charm of the sovereign, illustrated in her banquets organized by her to display the luxury of her court, and to impress her guests. France, around 1630. Entourage of Claude Deruet. Very good condition, parquet flooring, original gilt wood frame. 45.5x 37.5
