Object description :

"Bronze - Brown Patina - Faun With Owls Against A Red Marble Base - 19th Century"
Very beautiful bronze with brown patina entitled "Fauna with owls" against a red marble base, this very beautiful piece dates from the 19th century. Dimensions: H: 35 x W: 20.5 cm

Our young Faun takes care of feeding a hungry young owl under the watchful eyes of two other little owls patiently waiting their turn.
The patina is exceptional.

In Roman mythology, a Faun (from the Latin faunus) is a rustic country divinity. She is represented with the body of a man, but the legs and horns of a goat.
Fauns were belatedly assimilated to satyrs of Greek mythology by the Romans (horse men).
Creature of the World of the Small People, the Fauna lives mainly in the forests of cork oaks. It feeds on fruits and roots, and is used to saying that humans are evil beasts!
Poets claim that the voice of Fauns was often heard in the thick woods.
Though demigods, fauns were not immortal, but died only after a very long existence.

Faunus is a protective deity of flocks and he gives them fertility and defends them against wolves, hence the name "Lupercus" which is also often attributed to him (from Lupus: "wolf").

He is also a prophetic god whose voice resounds in the silence of the night to pronounce oracles.
