Object description :

""l'affaire de la tour de Nesle""
Painting on a historical subject of great rarity, painted in the 19th century on a mahogany panel. This scene represents the daughters of the King of France, Philippe le Bel, in front of the prison where their condemned lovers are locked up. the tower of Nesle is the name given to a state affair, which broke out within the French royal family in 1314 and during which the three daughter-in-law of the king of France Philippe IV le Bel were accused of adultery. The accusations against them are made by Isabelle, the only daughter of Philippe le Bel and Queen Consort of England. The scandal takes its name from the tower of Nesle, located in the center of Paris and where the adultery of the princesses was allegedly committed. It leads to the execution of the lovers of the princesses, and to the imprisonment of the latter. From a more general point of view, the event seriously shook the Capetian dynasty, whose direct branch died out a little over a decade after the discovery of the case (see Wikipedia ...) tones. unsigned, dimensions without frame: 57x41 cms. with frame: 82x66 cms.
