"Madonna Sewing"“La Couseuse”, workshop variant

Expertize available upon request provided by Prof. Andrea Emiliani
Oil on canvass, cm 28.5 X 21.5
Frame “a cartoccio” of the XVII century
This painting has been recently discovered. We believe though the painting is a workshop variant rather than fully attributable to Guido Reni.
As Prof Andrea Emiliani wrote “La tela qui studiata si configura chiaramente come una delle varianti della ben nota Madonna del Cucito”.
The canvass sometimes during the XIX century had been glued on a slab used by Macchiaioli. A careful philological restauration has allowed the recovery of the painting. Prof Emiliani expressed his happiness about it and emphasized the beauty of the “biacca” strokes of the Virgin’s dress.
The stunning “a cartoccio” frame highlights the beauty of this painting, a devotional “Capoletto” (head of a bed). This was a kind of prototype created by Guido Reni for the Borghese family as reported by Malvasia “e benche’ il Cardinal Borghese soddisfatto di molti quadri, ma in particolare di due rametti da letto preziosissimi, co’ quali avea Guido regalato al Papa…”.
La “Couseuse” was one of the two paintings Guido Reni gave the Pope as a gift (the two originals were on copper) of the same size of the one here presented; Malvasia further wrote “la B.V. Che cuscie al cussino coll'ago trapinge un laceto alla presenza d'angioli che la servono.....”.
