Note: a tiny hole barely visible at the bottom left under the palette.

After studying painting (he was awarded the first Prix de Rome in 1911), he was admitted as a boarder at the Villa Medici from 1911 to 1913. He then turned to cinema, first as a decorator and then as a film director from 1922.
In 1930, his first talking picture, A Beautiful Bitch, was a commercial success, a success that was not repeated afterwards. He abandoned the cinema at the end of the 1930s, returned to painting, then made short films from 1945 onwards.
He resumed his activity as a painter after leaving the cinema in the mid-60s for good.
